Home Planning & Development Building Building Inspection & Permits
Building permits are required for all new buildings and usually for alterations, renovations, additions, or tenant improvements to existing buildings. If you’re not sure whether your project needs a building permit, start by reviewing Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) Building Bylaw No. 4433.
Also, check out Applying for a Building Permit for more information on what is required for a building permit application. Still have questions? Contact the Building Inspector for your area—we’re here to help.
CVRD Building Inspectors are registered Building Officials through the Building Officials Association of BC as required by the provincial Building Act. Building Officials ensure that construction meets the minimum acceptable building regulations established by the provincial government, most commonly, through the British Columbia (BC) Building Code. Building Officials are employed by local governments to review the compliance of building design, and monitor building construction compliance with the BC Building Code, and local bylaws. We review plans, issue building permits, and monitor buildings under construction. Once a building permit is issued, inspections are required at various stages of construction, and inspection records are maintained for historical and current permits related to a property.
