The CVRD currently owns and operates four Level 2 dual port Electric Vehicle (EV) charging
stations that are available for public use. There is one Level 2 EV charging station located at
each of the following CVRD recreation centres:
Initially funded primarily by provincial grants in 2012/2013, all EV charging stations at CVRD recreation facilities were installed to demonstrate leadership in supporting the broader transition to EVs. Knowing that there is access to an EV charger decreases range anxiety and enables EV drivers to travel longer distances.
The original Level 2 charging stations were replaced in 2019 as they were over seven years old and the supplier was no longer guaranteeing eplacement parts for the original ones. The new chargers are equipped with enhanced software features and new hardware technology with
energy star certification.
User fees collected from the four stations go directly to fund the existing stations and plan for their replacement. All EV charging stations at CVRD recreation facilities have a 3 hour maximum usage limit.
NEW Fees for Level 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations
Effective January 1, 2025, a new fee of $2.00 per hour will be required for charging electric vehicles (EV) at the CVRD’s recreation facilities.
Fund Stations: User fees collected from the four stations go directly to fund the existing stations and plan for their replacement.
Manage Demand: Usage of the stations has increased, and a time-based fee encourages EV drivers to move their vehicles once the battery is sufficiently charged.
Maintain Station Availability: Reduce unnecessary charging and provide stations for people who need charging while at the centre or in order to complete their travels, and for those without access to a charger at home, such as rental apartments or condominiums that don’t provide EV charging infrastructure.
