Pumpkins as Wildlife Attractants

2024 WildSafe Pumpkin Wildlife Attractant

Hey Cowichan,

The CVRD is bear country - make sure that the only guest on your front porch is a trick-or-treater!

Did you know that when you leave your carved pumpkins outside, they attract wildlife such as bears, deer, and elk?  Rotting jack-o-lanterns can be a food source for wildlife, leading animals to become food-conditioned in neighbourhoods or at the roadside, which risks human-wildlife conflicts and collisions with wildlife in the pursuit of food.

The BC Conservation Officer Service recommends only putting pumpkins out on Oct. 31st, before disposing of them in your backyard composter or bringing them to a CVRD Recycling Centre free of charge.

For more information on how to manage attractants and to report wildlife sightings, visit: https://wildsafebc.com/

Call the RAPP hotline (1-877-952-7277) to report any human-wildlife interactions where public or wildlife safety may be at risk.
