Duncan, BC – The Solid Waste Management Plan provides the long-term vision for managing waste in the region, and is an important document that helps determine what waste and recycling services should be provided over the next ten to twenty years. The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is seeking public input on the Solid Waste Management Plan amendment through a series of open houses. The first open house has been scheduled for April 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Island Savings Centre in the Koksilah Room, on 2687 James Street, Duncan.

“If you’re interested in how recycling and garbage is managed within the CVRD, this is the perfect opportunity to provide comments”, says Tauseef Waraich, Recycling & Waste Management Division Manager. “This first public open house will provide background and an overview of the existing system, so residents can learn more about how solid waste is managed in the region”.

The Solid Waste Management Plan was last amended in 2006, and is due for an update to ensure it continues to reflect the region’s waste management goals and objectives. The amendment process started in February 2018, with the formation of a Plan Advisory Committee that includes members of the public, the waste management industry, and technical staff. The CVRD is now looking for public input through the first of multiple open houses. “While the advisory committee and stakeholders provide a necessary contribution, input from residents throughout the planning process is also critical to developing effective long-term strategies for the region.” says Waraich.
