[ARCHIVED] Backyard Burning Restrictions

Let’s Clear the Air, Cowichan. Do you know what burning regulations are in place to protect air quality in your neighbourhood? CVRD Bylaw No. 3716 - Smoke Control Regulation Bylaw, 2013,  restricts backyard burning in Mill Bay/Malahat (Area A), Shawnigan Lake (Area B), Cobble Hill (Area C), Cowichan Bay (Area D), Cowichan Station/Sahtlam/Glenora (Area E) and now Saltair (Area G, excluding the Gulf Islands).

Local municipalities also have restrictions on backyard burning. Check with your local government to learn the regulations in your area. Instead of burning, be a good neighbour and drop off your yard and garden waste for free composting at a CVRD Recycling Centre.

Detailed information on the CVRD Smoke Control Bylaw, backyard burning windows, and burning alternatives, can be found at cvrd.bc.ca/cleartheair. To report a violation in CVRD Electoral Areas, call CVRD Bylaw Enforcement at 250.746.2600.
