[ARCHIVED] Mt Hayes Wildfire Evening Update 2021-08-21

The Mt. Hayes wildfire surpassed the 48 hour mark on Saturday with ongoing efforts by fire crews focused on containing the area and preventing against any further spread. 

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) used heavy machinery to establish fireguards around the perimeter of the wildfire today and there was once again no significant growth reported.  Night operations on the ground will continue this evening and into Sunday. 

BCWS resources expected for tomorrow are three helicopters, 56 firefighters and five officers. Cowichan region firefighters are also continuing to provide support. 

The Evacuation Alert and Orders issued by the CVRD’s Regional Emergency Operations Centre on Friday remain in place.  

At the Nanaimo Airport, commercial aircraft are operating with certain restrictions.

 The next scheduled update on the Mt. Hayes wildfire will be provided on Sunday morning, or earlier if the information is time sensitive.
