Open burning is restricted in the Cowichan region to protect human health by reducing air pollution. For all lands in Electoral Areas (excluding Areas F, H, I and Thetis Island):
- Open burning is only permitted from March 15 to April 15
- BC venting conditions must be rated GOOD
- All burning must occur between 7 a.m. and sunset
- Only untreated natural wood, prunings or branches can be burned (NO leaves, grass clippings, garbage or construction waste)
- Open burning piles must be located at least 10 metres from all property lines
- Limited to one pile 2 metres in diameter and 2 metres in height
There are many alternatives to open burning. All CVRD Recycling Centres and Fisher Road Recycling offer FREE drop-off for yard and garden waste.
