[ARCHIVED] Free bus rides for kids and Canada Day service information

Free bus rides for kids and Canada Day service information

When that last school bell heralds the official start of summer, BC Transit and the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) have a special reward for students: eight days of free bus rides.

“The start of summer holidays is an exciting time for students,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit President and Chief Executive Officer. “Offering free transit to students will show them the benefits of using the efficient and effective Cowichan Valley Transit System.”

From Friday, June 30 to Friday July 7, students from kindergarten through Grade 12 will be able to ride Cowichan Valley Regional Transit buses including eligible handyDART registrants for free just by showing their valid student ID.

“We are pleased to offer this new promotion to youth in the valley as a way for them to experience the local bus service and hopefully make it part of a new routine,” says CVRD Chair Jon Lefebure.

The School’s Out program is designed to encourage students to take the bus throughout summer holidays – and beyond.

(The School’s Out program does not apply to commuter bus routes - 66 Duncan/Victoria and 99 Shawnigan Lake/Victoria)

As an added bonus, local transit routes will be operating on a Saturday schedule on July 1, for the Canada Day 150 holiday and events. The exception will be commuter routes, which will not be in operation that day.

On Monday, July 3, handyDART will operate on a Saturday service.

Regular fares will apply.
