[ARCHIVED] Island Savings Centre Seeking Community Input

Island Savings Centre Seeking Community Input

Duncan, BC - The Island Savings Centre Commission is asking the public for their ideas on new and improved programs and services that could be offered at the Island Savings Centre.

Community workshops will be held at the Island Savings Centre (Heritage Hall) on Monday, June 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. Following a brief introduction, there will be plenty of opportunity for people to discuss ideas with other Island Savings Centre users.

“Island Savings Centre has been in operation since 1978,” notes Island Savings Centre Commission Chair Al Siebring. “We have seen many changes, and we need to continue to grow and adapt to meet community needs.”

The Island Savings Centre, located at the north end of Duncan, is one of several Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) recreation and community facilities. It provides a hub of activity that is important to people who live nearby, as well as to those who come from other parts of the Valley to enjoy its programs and services.

Today, most parts of the building are very busy, including the library, Performing Arts Centre, arena, and multi-purpose rooms. There are numerous programs for people of all ages, including arts, music, fitness, sports, skill development, and entertainment. Other parts of the building, such as the former Aquannis Centre (pool), have some under-utilized areas that could allow the CVRD to reorganize the building space to meet growing or changing community interests.

“We want to hear from our community users,” says Siebring. “We want to hear from the community; what do you love about the Island Savings Centre? What can we do better? Should we offer other services or expand existing ones?”
